Capital

I learned that capital means money, then learned to capitalize my name, as though a person becomes worth more by learning where their letters should stand. Capital city. Capital punishment. Capital gain. Strange little family of words, one builds, one takes, one kills. And somewhere between them, a girl is taught to become capita, to make herself valuable, legible, marketable enough to be mistaken for safe. Spine-

Books and women share a spine. One is judged by how well it holds together. The other by how long it can. We call them well-read well-bread well-bound, ironic how every compliment sounds like a way to keep something closed. A bent page becomes a bookmark. A bent woman becomes a warning. I wonder how many of us mistook breaking for opening. Or whether we were simply taught, that a cracked spine is easier to forgive on a book, than on a woman.

Footnote-

I have turned entire cities into footnotes. I didn’t forget them, I remembered them incorrectly, that’s why. Memory has terrible punctuation. It keeps putting commas where people left, and full stops where they came back. I’ve spent years editing places that never asked to be rewritten. The original still exists. I’m just no longer its author.
